Callie

Nash is moving before his brother can get another word out. He tugs my shirt back down and throws the tangled sheets over my legs. A quick kiss, and he’s out the door.

For the first time, I notice his pajama bottoms are covered in fluffy sheep, and I bite my lip to hide my smile.

I burrow down under the covers, and the movement alone makes my body sing. I still feel every single thing Nash did to me. Just the thought of his mouth on me makes my cheeks burn.

It’s a total disaster. For both of us. The last thing I want is a long-distance relationship, and Nash might want me, but wanting someone and wanting to be with someone are two totally different things.

The voices in the living room get louder. It’s not just Nash and Liam in there. There’s at least one more, and it’s loud and frantic and … familiar.

I jump out of Nash’s bed and stealthily tiptoe into my room where I throw on my bra and yesterday’s shorts. The hickies Nash left on my neck are visible, and I quickly let my dark hair down and finger comb it. My reflection in the mirror above the dresser isn’t perfect, but it’ll do.

Nash, Liam, and Professor Bleeker are locked in a weird, triangular standoff in the living room.

Kyle, an associate biology professor who’s acting as Bleeker’s second-in-command this summer, stands near the door with the rest of the students—all guys. They looked tired and uncomfortable.

Professor B’s face is tomato red and there’s spittle at the corners of his mouth. “You produce Callie Kady this minute, or I will call whatever passes for law enforcement in this backwater.”

Nash’s hands are at his sides, but they’re fisted. His shoulders are tight and his stance is straight as an arrow. He doesn’t look at all like the man who was rolling around with me in bed five minutes ago. He looks like a man that’s about to send my ticket to grad school through a picture window.

“I’m fine,” I say, hip checking Nash on my way to Professor B. “I’m here.”

In a move so shocking I can’t shift out of his reach fast enough, the Creeper throws his arms around me and squeezes me tight.

“Oh, thank God,” he says against my hair. “Thank God. When we couldn’t get ahold of you, we just drove straight through and found your car. We were so worried.”

Point of fact: None of the other students look worried. Exhausted and exasperated? Yes. Worried? No.

“Are you okay?” he asks. “Why on Earth didn’t you take your phone with you? And your things? Anyone could have stolen them right out of your car.”

Liam scoffs at that, but Professor Bleeker releases me, leaning back to run his hands over the sides of my face as if assessing for damage. I hate the way his hands feel—cold and smooth and clammy. Nash’s hands are warm and rough and comforting, and I glance back at him over my shoulder. His face is hard and furious.
